Artist Bio
Lydia Ethem is an artist born and raised in Baltimore, Maryland. She lives and breathes a craft that is suffused with ethereal imagery and a vivid color palette. Growing up an only child, she found herself whisked away by the world of fiction and myth, and has created art all her life in pursuit of bringing fantasy to life. She began her artistic education upon entering George Washington Carver Center in 2015, focusing mainly on her drawing, painting, digital art, and animation practice. She then continued her pursuit at the Maryland Institute College of Art in 2019. During her four year tenure at MICA, she honed those skills and broadened her portfolio to further include craft, fiber, and installation work. Graduating from MICA as Summa Cum Laude in 2023, she is now active in her beloved city of Baltimore as an artist making and selling a spectrum of whimsical creations.
Inspired by everything from classical Greek sculpture, Mannerism, and Romanticism, to anime, music, and international pop culture, Lydia uses her skills as a multimedia artist to create art that jumps off the canvas and envelopes the viewer whether it be a painting, installation, or physical object made for one to hold. She does this in such a way that might recall a story book or fairy tale, pairing that soft and comforting aesthetic with the grotesque or macabre.
